As “green” jobs become more prevalent, the University of Central Florida is hosting an event to educate students and others about careers in all types of industries that contribute to preserving the quality of our world.
The 2011 Green Jobs Workshop will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, in room 316 of the Student Union. It is free and open to the public.
The workshop will teach attendees how to position themselves in a green economy. It’s designed to get them thinking about how they can mesh their career aspirations and skills with sustainable living.
The workshop will feature speakers from a variety of backgrounds, such as business, health, policy, sustainable agriculture, technology, land management and compliance.
“We want to show students that the environmental field is not only for biologists, engineers and environmental studies majors,” explained Samantha Ruiz, president of the environmental advocacy student group I.D.E.A.S.
Community professionals who have incorporated sustainability into their careers will speak and facilitate round table discussions.
Representatives from UCF Career Services & Experiential Learning will provide career development resources and resume consulting.
“This event is designed to create opportunities for students to take action,” said Julian Belilty, the sustainability specialist for UCF’s Student Government Association. “We hope that the diverse facilitators will help personally guide students toward a greener career path that will perfectly fit within their field of study.”
The workshop is coordinated by SGA, I.D.E.A.S., Career Services & Experiential Learning, UCF Sustainability and Energy Management, E.Co and UCF Landscape and Natural Resources.
