Two Events to Celebrate the Legacy of MLK Jr.

The LEAD Scholars Academy and Multicultural Student Center are teaming up for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. parade in downtown Orlando on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 10 a.m.

The theme for this year’s parade is “Remember, Celebrate, Act! ‘King’s Legacy of Peace with Justice for Our World.'” The time commitment for the event is from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and includes transportation to and from the event, marching in the parade and a tour of the Wells Built Historic Museum. Those interested in participating in the parade should fill out this form, and can expect to be contacted with additional information.

Additionally, LEAD Scholars and the Multicultural Student Center are hosting a poster-making contest. Posters will be used in the parade, with the most creative earning a prize.

Back at UCF, Multicultural Student Center will host Tools for a Young Activist: “Selma” screening on Tuesday, Jan. 17 from 5-8:30 p.m. in the Live Oak Ballroom/Garden Room. “Selma” is based on a true story and chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965 when Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. A march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay’s “Selma” tells the story of how Martin Luther King, Jr. and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.
