For the UCF Environmental Initiative [1], keeping the campus “green” means more than planting trees. It means managing 800 acres of UCF land, improving storm-water drainage and preserving the habitats of more than 45 animal species, all while increasing sustainability.
The Initiative members maintain several sections of the UCF campus, including the Arboretum [2] and landscaped bio-geographical displays across campus that showcase native plants from regions such as Southeast Asia.
The Arboretum is an 80-acre area of native trees, lakes, hiking trails, and a conservatory greenhouse. So far, more than 600 species of plants have been identified within the arboretum.
Since its founding 25 years ago, the Arboretum is a symbol of UCF’s dedication to educating students and the community about nature, while protecting our environment.
The Arboretum, located between the College of Engineering and Computer Science [3] and the College of Optics and Photonics [4], is open to the public.
