South Lake Race benefits Special Olympics, Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation

Proceeds from the recent 4th annual UCF Charity Challenge 5K race will be presented Tuesday, May 1, to Special Olympics of Florida and the Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation.

Faculty and students will present $4,000 to the Clermont branch of Special Olympics, and $3,000 to the medical center foundation. The ceremony is open to the public and will be at noon at the UCF South Lake campus, 1250 N. Hancock Road, Clermont, in Building 2, Room 327.

The money was raised April 14 after several students from the UCF Sport and Exercise Science program in South Lake developed and hosted the race that drew 198 participants.

The money for Special Olympics was raised through event sponsorships and race registration, and the money for Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando was raised through a raffle of items provided by Palmer and baseball player Ken Griffey Jr.

Afterwards there will be an invitation-only banquet that will include the Patrick Roche Memorial Scholarship Award presentation and alumni recognition ceremony.

The scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Roche, a graduate of Sport and Fitness, who exemplified the core values of the program (now the Sport and Exercise Science program) while pursuing his passion despite medical and physical challenges.

This scholarship is designed to help South Lake campus students offset the cost of association membership renewal and/or professional certifications.
