A panel discussion on Central Florida’s role as educators and leaders in serving Puerto Rican residents affected by the recent hurricanes is Thursday, Oct. 19. The event is from 10 a.m. to noon in UCF Global, room 101, and is open to the public.

Hurricanes Irma and Maria left many in Puerto Rico without basic human necessities, and the current conditions in their homes are driving them to seek shelter and refuge outside of the island.

Given its proximity, Central Florida educational and community institutions can serve as logical and ideal entities to address some of the immediate needs of displaced Puerto Rican residents. Educational institutions, in particular, are in position to play an important role in meeting their needs.

The upcoming Puerto Rican Education Symposium panel will include representatives from the University of Central Florida, local public school districts, City of Orlando, Orlando Police Department and the Florida state house. Discussion points will include:

  • The impact on the Puerto Rican community in Orlando
  • How public schools are preparing and challenges ahead
  • The role of education and the Hurricane Maria diaspora
  • The impact on the Orlando community and next steps

    • At the end of the panel program, symposium participants will be invited to participate in different research working groups in the spirit of community engagement.
