MASS Students Impress Higher Education Administrators

Students from the Multicultural Academic and Support Services office received rave reviews during presentations recently at two national conferences.

Leon Hunter, senior political science major, and Emmanuel Jackson, junior sociology major, spoke at the Black, Brown and Collegebound conference in Tampa about their experiences in the MASS Brother to Brother Program.

Both transfer students told the conference audience that the “B2B” helped them become acclimated to UCF and how the program emphasizes the importance of networking and maintaining a strong grade point average. Hunter will graduate from UCF this spring and plans on attending law school in the fall and Jackson plans on working toward a master’s in social work after graduating from UCF. Jackson is currently a member of the UCF McNair Program.

Three other MASS students attended the First Year Experience Conference in Orlando and spoke about their experiences in the First Generation Program. Kevin Choy and Danielle Abbitt, both junior biomedical science majors, and senior Shanequa Bernard, double major in legal studies and theatre, all spoke about how the program has played an integral part in their success at UCF. All three presented on how the program has helped them understand the importance of using campus resources and getting to know the faculty members in their major.

Both Choy and Abbitt plan to attend medical school and Bernard is interested in working in the communications industry. The three students were accompanied by MASS Coordinator Claudine Turner and Director Wayne Jackson.

The MASS office is in the Division of Student Development and Enrollment Services.
