Gerstein to Show in Orlando Museum of Art Florida Prize in Contemporary Art

Mark Gerstein, associate professor of UCF’s School of Visual Arts & Design, has been chosen to exhibit in the 2017 Orlando Museum of Art Florida Prize in Contemporary Art. This annual event celebrates the achievements and innovation of Florida artists and the vision and talent inherent in their work.

This year’s event, the museum’s fourth exhibition, will include the works of 10 artists from around the state. Their presentations will be in sculpture, painting, film, photography, performance and installation.

Gerstein is an award-winning filmmaker whose career has led him to work with Hollywood studios and television networks such as Warner Bros., NBC, and ABC. He currently works with projecting video onto photographs and sculptural surfaces, transcending the range of a typical visual experience.

After moving to education, Gerstein worked on a series of narrative, documentary and experimental films showcased in numerous international film festivals and broadcast television. He said he is honored to have his first fine art exhibition at the Orlando Museum of Art.

“It’s a validation of my creative journey from the conventional idea of film as an image on a screen to this unique hybrid of film, photography and sculpture in a gallery setting,” he said. “It’s also an affirmation of the creative potential of a multi-disciplinary environment like SVAD.”

The Orlando Museum of Art Florida Prize in Contemporary Art exhibition will run June 2 through Aug. 20, with an opening preview party 7-10 p.m. June 2.
