Expert To Discuss Muslim Life in the West

Mohamed Younis, a senior analyst at the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies, will speak at the University of Central Florida about how Muslims adjust to life in Western nations.

“Muslim Life in the West: Addressing Muslim Integration in the U.S. and Western Europe” will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, in the Pegasus Ballroom of the Student Union. Younis’ presentation is a feature of the Al Ghazali Islamic Studies Program, housed in the UCF Global Perspectives Office, in partnership with the UCF College of Arts & Humanities. It is free and open to the public.

Younis, author of “Daughters of the Nile: The Evolution of Feminism in Egypt,” has traveled to Belgium, Ireland, and Norway as a U.S. delegate of the Citizen Dialogue Project at the invitation of the U.S. Department of State.

During his travels, Younis gave lectures on Muslim life in the West and the experience of American Muslims. He conducted meetings with government officials in all three nations addressing Muslim integration in Western Europe and the United States.

Younis has also worked to mentor and address the concerns of Muslim youth, especially through the grassroots organization ELEV8, which he co-founded in 2000.

Other speakers invited by the Al Ghazali Islamic Studies Program this year include Farah Pandith, a special representative to Muslim communities for the U.S. Department of State, and Amitabh Pal, an author and managing editor of the magazine The Progressive.

In addition to the Global Perspectives Office and Al Ghazali Islamic Studies Program, other sponsors and partners of Younis’ presentation include the UCF Middle Eastern Studies Program, the UCF Political Science Department, the UCF Diplomacy Program, the UCF Nicholson School of Communication, the UCF Book Festival 2012 in association with the Morgridge International Reading Center, the UCF International Services Center, UCF LIFE and the Global Connections Foundation.
