Campus Celebration Planned for UCF’s 50th Birthday

The UCF community will gather Monday to celebrate the university’s milestone 50th birthday five decades to the day that the university was born.

The birthday celebration will start at 12:30 p.m. June 10 in front of UCF’s first building, the campus library. On June 10, 1963, Florida Gov. Farris Bryant signed Legislative Bill 125 into law, which established Florida Technological University. FTU later changed its name to the University of Central Florida in 1978.

Hosted by the Student Government Association, the campus celebration will include frozen treats provided by Jeremiah’s Italian Ice while supplies last. Attendees also can pose for pictures in front of the Reflecting Pond courtesy of the student organization Late Knights.

The event is free for all students, faculty and staff.

A sold-out crowd will gather at the CFE Arena on Saturday, June 8, for a community-wide 50th anniversary celebration featuring food, fun, entertainment and a look back at UCF’s five decades of history. Proceeds from the event will benefit student scholarships.

Each of the university’s 12 colleges celebrated UCF’s 50th anniversary with a dedicated week of events during the spring semester that included presentations by guest speakers, fundraisers and other activities.

On March 20, the Florida Senate observed “UCF Day,” which recognized UCF’s many contributions to the state’s economy during the past 50 years and extended congratulations to UCF’s faculty, administration, staff, students and alumni on the milestone birthday and all their achievements.
