The best way to prevent theft—the top crime on college campuses—is by keeping an eye on your things and securing any valuables.
But there’s an important extra step you can take to ensure that in the event something goes missing or is stolen, your property makes it back into your hands.
The UCF Police Department engraves owners’ driver’s license numbers onto their laptops, tablets, bicycles, skateboards and other valuables for free as part of the nationally recognized Operation ID program.
Police will be at the Library from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Feb. 17, to engrave items.
If the item is lost or stolen, the engraved identification can be used by UCF Police and other law enforcement to track down the property and return it to its rightful owner.
Students also can register other property information, including an item’s make, model and serial number, with UCF Police. All of the registration information is available only to law enforcement agencies.
Property registration is free and can be done online at any time by visiting https://secure.police.ucf.edu/PropertyReg/.
Additional property engraving events will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the Library and from 5:30 to 7:30 that night at the Hercules Community Room, as well as from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in the Ferrell Commons courtyard.
