University of Central Florida alumna Laura Alexandra Ramos was awarded the “Best Actress” title at the annual Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival last week.

Ramos, who earned a bachelor’s degree in cinema studies from UCF in 2009, received the award for her lead role in the comic drama “Nerve.” The film is about a young man who battles social anxiety and looks to a Ramos’ character, a psychology student, for help.

More than 50 films were shown at the festival, which aims to support and promote independent cinema in Los Angeles by encouraging filmmakers with unique visions to create low-budget films.

Ramos lives in Los Angeles but is from New Port Richey, Fla. Her next project is a biopic about baseball legend Roberto Clemente.
