Track: Scott Breaks UCF 200M Record
Following her outstanding weekend at the Tyson Razorback Invitational, UCF track and field junior Aurieyall Scott was named the USTFCCCA Division I Female National Athlete of the Week on Monday. She became the first Knight to win the award in school history.
Not only did Scott run the world’s fastest 200M in 2013 with a school-record 22.68, she did it against reigning Bowerman winner Kimberlyn Duncan’s career-day in her signature event. Separated by nearly 1.5 seconds from the other two runners in their heat and more than half a second from the third-place overall finisher, Scott edged out Duncan (22.72) both on the track and in the record books, as Scott’s 22.68 made her the ninth-fastest collegian in the event indoors, displacing Duncan to No. 10.
Scott also ran the fastest prelims and semifinals times in the 60 meters at 7.24 and 7.20, respectively, but chose to forgo the finals in preparation for the 200M.
Awarded to six collegiate track and field and cross country athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions) each Monday by the USTFCCCA office, the National Athlete of the Week Award spotlights exceptional performances by student-athletes from around the nation.
The Knights have been recognized on the national level all season as UCF continued to rank among the country’s top 10 Monday, standing at No. 9 for the third week in a row. Coupled with the outdoor season, UCF has not fallen out of the top 25 dating to April 26, 2011.
UCF currently boasts five individuals and a relay team that hold eight marks that reign among the nation’s top 20 this season.
The Knights are enjoying a week off from action as they prepare for the Conference USA Indoor Championships. The team is on the hunt for its fifth conference title since 2010.
