TIDES Releases Four New Diversity Studies

The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) has produced four new studies. The primary author of the reports is Richard Lapchick, director of TIDES and the DeVos Sport Business Management Department.

Scoring the Hire, was supported and funded by the Black Coaches and Administrators (BCA), and examined NCAA Division I women’s basketball coaching positions. Based on the 25 graded schools, six (24 percent) hired a coach of color and 13 (52 percent) of those schools hired male coaches.

Striving for Sustained Positive Change: The Black Coaches and Administrators (BCA) Hiring Report Card for NCAA FBS and FCS Football Head Coaching Positions (2011-12), also supported and funded by the BCA. A total of 39 schools that participated in the study.

Mild Progress Continues: Assessing Diversity Among Campus and Conference Leaders for Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) Schools in the 2012-13 Academic Year examined the race and gender of conference commissioners and campus leaders, including college and university presidents, athletics directors and faculty athletics representatives for all 120 FBS institutions. The study also included assistant coaches, student-athletes and faculty as a whole.

Keeping Score When It Counts: Assessing the 2012-2013 Bowl-bound College Football Teams’ Graduation Rates, examined the overall academic progress and graduation rates of the 70 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools (formerly known as Division I-A schools) playing in this year’s college football bowl games.

TIDES [1] is part of the DeVos Sport Business Management Graduate Program in the University of Central Florida’s College of Business Administration. This landmark program focuses on business skills necessary for graduates to conduct successful careers in the rapidly changing and dynamic sports industry while also emphasizing diversity, community service and social issues in sport.
