Stanford, UCF Top BCS Teams in the Classroom

The University of Central Florida has the second-highest graduation rate for football players out of the 10 teams competing in the Bowl Championship Series.

UCF’s graduation rate of 83 percent for football student-athletes trails only Stanford University among BCS teams and ranks No. 12 overall among the 70 teams competing in bowl games.

The annual study of the academic performance of bowl game participants is conducted by UCF’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport, led by endowed chair and director Richard Lapchick.

The study also looks at the institutions’ overall graduation rates for student-athletes. UCF tied for No. 10 in that category among the 70 bowl teams. Both UCF and Alabama recorded overall graduation rates of 89 percent.

To conduct the annual study, the institute reviewed six-year graduation rates of each school’s freshman classes that enrolled between 2003 and 2006.

No. 15 UCF (11-1, 8-0) will be making its first appearance in a BCS bowl when it tangles with Big 12 champion No. 6 Baylor (11-1, 8-1) in the 2014 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Jan. 1.
