UCF’s South Lake Campus will host an open house June 27 to commemorate the university’s 50th anniversary, featuring presentations by a former president of Lake-Sumter State College and several notable Lake County UCF alumni.
The event will be 5-7 p.m. in the campus’ Cooper Memorial Library, 1250 N. Hancock Road, Clermont.
Robert Westrick, retired president of LSSC and a former associate vice president at the UCF Brevard Campus, will recap UCF South Lake’s early beginnings and the impact and growth of the university, which is now the second largest in the nation at nearly 60,000 students.

Everyone in Lake, Sumter and west Orange counties is invited to attend and hear about the campus’ plans. Information also will be provided about current services and programs at the campus.
“Our goal is to continue to grow the campus through our DirectConnect partnership with Lake-Sumter State College, including greater outreach in Sumter county,” said Cecelia H. Rivers, assistant vice president, UCF Western Region Campuses. “We’ll also be forming an advisory committee to help us better identify unmet higher-education needs in our local community, and ways UCF South Lake can work in closer partnership with local businesses and organizations.”
The gathering is at Cooper Memorial Library, an unsual collaboration of three partners: the Lake County Library system, Lake-Sumter State College and UCF. The 50,000-square-foot facility opened in 2009 on the South Lake campus and has a high volume of use. For example, circulation of books for April was more than 229,000, more than all the other libraries in the county combined.
