Today’s “digital generation” does almost everything online, from watching movies to banking and communicating with friends.

How to engage young voters through social media, online voting for primary elections and other means will be part of a stimulating discussion at a University of Central Florida political symposium to be held from 8:25 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. Monday, Sept.26, inthe Pegasus Ballroom of the UCF Student Union.

Organized by the Lou Frey Institute of Politics and Government, “Campaign 2012: New Rules of the Road?” is free and open to the public. Hundreds of students from UCF and several local middle and high schools will attend.

Fittingly, the symposium also will be broadcast online at www.loufrey.org.

Speakers include Andrew Roos, Google’s account executive for elections and issue advocacy; Adam Kravitz, CEO and co-founder of eVoter Inc.; and Thomas Mann, the W. Averell Harriman Chair and a senior fellow in governance studies with The Brookings Institution.

Ann B. Helmuth, president of the League of Women Voters of Orange County, also will speak. Her presentation is part of an afternoon session on redistricting and campaign finance.

The Lou Frey Institute of Politics and Government is a nonpartisan organization affiliated with the UCF Department of Political Science. The institute promotes civic education and engagement, particularly among young people. Institute programs encourage informed discussion of issues from diverse viewpoints, stimulate participation in the political process and support research on politics and policy.

Frey, the institute’s founder, represented Central Florida in Congress from 1969 to 1979. He has received the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress’ Distinguished Service Award for his efforts to improve civic education and encourage young people to be more actively involved in their government.

Sponsors for the symposium include the Lowndes, Drosdick, Doster, Kantor & Reed law firm; the UCF Department of Political Science; the UCF College of Sciences; the UCF Foundation; the UCF Global Perspectives Office; the United States Association of Former Members of Congress; the U.S. Department of Education; the Florida Chamber of Commerce; Teachers First; and The Flemming Foundation.
