Flagler College of St. Augustine racked up a flawless day of surfing competition Monday as its six-member surf team mowed through the field of six schools to capture the Collegiate Surfing Association’s East Coast Championships. The win earned Flagler’s surf team a $500 donation from the CSA.
The CSA event featured the best waves yet of Surf Fest 2010, with 4- to 5-foot surf and mostly good conditions throughout the event. The early morning saw numerous tube rides and some of the day’s highest scores as light offshore winds feathered the waves making for some big barrels.
UCF’s Amy Nicholl of New Smyrna Beach was the event’s Most Valuable Female Surfer. She also received a $350 scholarship.
UCF, the 2009 CSA regional championship runner- up, put up a good fight, but ultimately lost to Florida Tech by less than eight-tenths of a point in the semifinals. Florida Tech standout Sebastian Moreno prodded the Panthers along throughout the event, but they were ultimately no match for Flagler.
