Honors Summer Institute Includes Spanish Language Program

Adults seeking to master the Spanish language can look to the University of Central Florida as a guide.

UCF’s Burnett Honors College is offering its first-ever summer language program this year, giving anyone over age 18 the opportunity to learn Spanish in a short amount of time. With Berlitz Orlando as a partner, the Burnett Honors College Summer Institute will run from May 14 through June 22.

Classes will be held in the Burnett Honors College located on UCF’s main campus. Typical class days will go from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with dinner and nighttime activities after class.

The six-week program consists of intensive, around-the-clock instruction through a variety of activities that will leave participants fully conversational in Spanish by the end of the program.

In addition to classroom projects and assignments, students will listen to guest speakers and go on field trips.

Prior knowledge of the language is not required, and courses will be tailored to meet different proficiency levels.

“The Burnett Honors College is always pushing students to make sure they have a very diverse college experience,” said Dr. Jill Norburn, director of Student Affairs for the Burnett Honors College. “We realize that knowing additional languages gives people an edge in a very competitive job market, and we hope that members of the Central Florida community consider our program.”

The cost of the program is $1,950. The Honors College and Berlitz Orlando partnered to give each of the program’s 20 participants a $1,000 credit; the class typically costs $2,950. The cost includes course materials, lab usage, books, shirts, activities, a closing ceremony and lunches and dinners.
