The Latin American Student Association, formally known as the Hispanic American Student Association, invited the UCF community to join in the Hispanic Heritage Month activities and events during September 15-October 15. Marco Davis, deputy director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, was keynote speaker at the kick-off event. The celebration’s entertainment included music, dance and food, sharing the traditions and culture of the Hispanic community.

At the closing of Hispanic Heritage Month at UCF, Cyndia Morales, LASA advisor, presented opening remarks encouraging Latinos and students to take pride in their cultural heritage and to make the most out of every opportunity to share their heritage with others. Over a hundred students and staff attended the event and enjoyed performances by the Columbian Student Association, Capoeira Brazilian Pelourinho, Latin Rhytmn and Pulso Caribe. Bobby González, author, storyteller and poet, served as the closing speaker presenting, “Reconnect to Your Roots: Create a Powerful Future by Drawing on Your Heritage.” At the end of the program, UCF Knights and friends enjoyed food catered by Rice & Beans Cocina Latina, a Cuban restaurant in Orlando, which was followed by festive dancing.

The celebration was made possible with support from the UCF Student Government Association, Rocha Financial Group, LLC, and UCF Community Relations.
