Expo Attracts Students to Learn about Being a Healthy Knight

The 11th annual Healthy Knights 2020 was held on October 4 in the Pegasus Ballroom impacting 1,260 students. The expo offered health and wellness information to students and was the most interactive in the event’s history. Students enjoyed healthy cooking demos, group exercise, body mass index readings, drum circles and relaxation stations.

Annually the event is an opportunity for students to learn about and engage with all the services at UCF that can aid them in holistic wellbeing. In addition, it created a space for students to “Just Be.” There were stations for students to experience biofeedback/relaxation, color, make aromatherapy scents, journal and paint rocks for the Counseling and Psychological Services’ rock garden. CAPS also offered opportunities for the students to participate in a personal strengths screening, and view a demo of their drumming workshop.

Student Health Services shared information about Smoke Free campus and had their staff onsite to offer free flu shots to students. Wellness and Health Promotion Services shared a cooking demo and passed out information regarding sexual health related information. The Recreation and Wellness Center gave students a chance to tryout basketball wheelchairs from its inclusive recreation program, take part in two energetic group exercise demos and get body mass index tests from the personal training staff.

Student Health Services’ Crystal Colvenbach said, “We love collaborating with different departments each year to help bring this event to life. It’s really important to all of us involved that students know how to take care of their health, as well as the resources available to them whenever they might need them. Our main goal is that each student that stopped by the expo walked away having learned something new, and hopefully had a little fun in the process.”

Knightro made an appearance and was sure to get his flu shot, then had a great time taking pictures with students and doing a cardio class demo on stage with the RWC instructors. Students were able to enjoy fresh fruit and smoothies from Smoothie King.

From surveys students filled out, some comments included what they learned:

  • Some good ways to keep my mind happy and healthy.
  • So much about all the resources UCF offers.
  • About what a healthy lifestyle is and how to eat healthy.
  • The successful event was a collaboration of departments within Student Development and Enrollment Services along with UCF departments such as UCF Police.
