The talent competition “Culture Shock” is Friday, October 3 at 7 p.m. held at the UCF Nicholson School of Communications Auditorium.
UCF’s Asian American student organizations united to bring Culture Shock, a talent and dance competition, to bring awareness and excitement ahead of the upcoming elections in the Asian American community.
According to a recent Pew Research study at: www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/04/09/asian-american-voter-turnout-lags-behind-other-groups-some-non-voters-say-theyre-too-busy/, Asian Americans have the lowest turnout of any group and are the least likely to vote.
The UCF’ Pi Delta Psi Fraternity at the UCF was awarded a grant from the national APIA Vote organization to facilitate the event. The League of Women Voters of Orange County and the UCF Student Government Association will be conducting voter registration.
Culture Shock will bring together various cultures from Asian, African, and Hispanic American culture to showcase their various talents in hopes of showcasing all forms of diversity found here at UCF on a campus wide scale.
Student performances range from traditional Filipino tinkling bamboo stick dance to modern robotic-style dub step dance. The 1st prize is $300 and 2nd place prize is $200, to be decided by a panel of judges including City of Orlando citizens’ advisory board member, Molly Delahunt; SGA President Weston Bayes; and Orange County Property Appraiser Rick Singh.
Pi Delta Psi Fraternity is collaborating with UCF’s Asian Pacific American Coalition, Asian Student Association, Filipino Student Association, Vietnamese American Student Association, Chinese American Student Association, Korean Student Association, Delta Phi Lambda Sorority, Delta Phi Omega Sorority, and Delta Epsilon Psi Fraternity to bring this event together.
