College of Sciences Contest Seeks New Gonfalon Design

The College of Sciences is celebrating UCF’s 50th anniversary in several ways, including a design contest to encourage UCF students, staff, faculty and friends of the university to think about science in a creative way.

Gonfalons originated in the medieval state of Italy as an ensign of the state of office. The UCF gonfalons are hung during commencement ceremonies to represent colleges.

The gonfalons designate the university seal, the various colleges, and the core values of The UCF Creed.  The colors of the university, black and gold, are joined together in a UCF star common to all colleges.

Everyone is eligible to submit a design, which is due Dec. 31.

The gonfalon will be represented on a banner 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide. The UCF star must be present in the top left of the banner, and there can be no words, just block, high contrast images only.

Colors are limited to the black background, with images in gold and white.

Submissions should include a description of 300 characters or fewer, including spaces and punctuation.

Designs should be submitted in electronic form one of three ways.

  • The submission form is available at  http://www.cos.ucf.edu/50th/gonfalon/
  • Physical mail – UCF College of Sciences, Building 54, Room 201, Orlando, FL 32816.
  • Hand-delivered – UCF College of Sciences Building – CS 201, c/o Teresa Dorman

The image fiile should be saved as a vector file (.pdf, .ai, or eps), and is limited to 5MB. If delivered via physical mail or hand-delivery, place design on electronic media, such as a USB flash drive or CD/DVD.

Selection of the winning design will consist of a two-part process. First, a committee consisting of students, alumni, faculty, and staff will determine the top two or three choices. These top choices will be submitted to the dean of the College of Sciences, the UCF registrar, the vice president of Student Development and Enrollment Services, and the UCF president, who will collectively determine the winning design.

The winning gonfalon will hang at each of the college’s commencement ceremonies. The designer(s) will be recognized during UCF’s 50th celebration week for the College of Sciences, which is Feb. 4-8, 2013. The winner will receive recognition in the college’s online newsletter and on the college’s website.
