Although drafted 226 years ago, the U.S. Constitution is just as alive now as the day it was adopted, Sept. 17, 1787.
The University of Central Florida on Tuesday will celebrate Constitution Day with a free showing of a PBS documentary, a guest speaker, and informative question-and-answer sessions.
The Office of Undergraduate Studies is pairing up with the Student Government Association to reinforce the importance of the U.S. Constitution and emphasize how relevant the Constitution remains today in our daily lives.
The event will be from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Cape Florida Ballroom of the Student Union and will feature a screening of Constitution USA with Peter Sagal. Sagal is host of NPR’s weekly hour-long quiz program, “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!”
The documentary consists of four episodes addressing different topics regarding the Constitution with question-and-answer sessions to be held after each episode by UCF professors from the Legal Studies and Political Science departments. Topics include federalism, the Bill of Rights, equality and the enduring nature of the U.S. Constitution.
Orlando attorney Diana Tennis will be on hand at 12:30 p.m. to discuss how the Constitution manifests itself inside the courtroom at the local level.
