The College of Engineering and Computer Science welcomes Dr. Golam Newaz as the new Chair and CAE Link Professor in the Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering (MMAE) Department.

Dr. Newaz is an established researcher in developing analytical and experimental techniques for identifying the causes of failure in materials at elevated temperature, particularly, metal matrix composites, ceramic matrix composites and thermal barrier coatings. He is a leading expert in damage tolerance design approach in advanced polymeric composite materials and is the co-author of a major resource book, “Damage Tolerance in Advanced Composites” published by CRC Press.

“We are delighted that Dr. Newaz is joining our College in this leadership position.  He brings a wealth of academic and industrial experience and I know that our MMAE department will benefit greatly from his vision and experience,” said Interim Dean Marwan Simaan.

Dr. Newaz’s research has been supported by NASA, AFOSR, NSF, FAA, US Army, USAF, State of Michigan and companies like GE Aircraft Engines, Lockheed-Martin, DaimlerChrysler and Ford.

Currently, Dr. Newaz is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Wayne State University and will join UCF in January 2010.  Prior to joining Wayne State in 1995, he spent more than ten years at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio in the Solid Mechanics Group.
