ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith and Dr. Bernice King, daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will be part of the events commemorating Black History Month at UCF.

Several campus organizations have teamed up to celebrate the contributions African-Americans have made in the United States. The Multicultural Student Center has partnered with many groups to provide a celebration focused on this year’s theme:  “Souls of Black Folk.”

The center kicked off Black History Month on Feb. 2 with activities exploring African-American history through dance, film and speech.

Some highlights of the month are coming up:

At 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, the center will host Smith in the Pegasus Ballroom of the Student Union. Smith, the month’s featured speaker, is a commentator on ESPN2’s “First Take” and a columnist for ESPN.com. The event is free and open to the public.

At 8 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, the UCF Black Faculty and Staff Association will host its 21st annual Joseph C. Andrews Mentoring Celebration in the Pegasus Ballroom. The celebration, which recognizes the accomplishments of mentees and the efforts of mentors, will feature guest speaker King, who is CEO of the King Center in Atlanta. Tickets to the event are available.

Following her talk, King will be available for book signing.

There are other planned activities for the month, from musical performances and tips on how to stay healthy to a fashion show.
